An organization (or organisation — see spelling differences) is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, controls its own performance, and has a boundary separating it from its environment. The word itself is derived from the Greek word organon, itself derived from the better-known word ergon.

In the social sciences, organizations are the object of analysis for a number of disciplines, such as sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management, and organizational communication. In more specific contexts, particularly for sociologists, the term "institution" may be preferred. The broader analysis of organizations is commonly referred to as organizational studies, organizational behavior or organization analysis. A number of different theories and perspectives exist, some of which are compatible,

  • Organization – process-related: an entity is being (re-)organized (organization as task or action).
  • Organization – functional: organization as a function of how entities like businesses or state authorities are used (organization as a permanent structure).
  • Organization – institutional: an entity is an organization (organization as an actual purposeful structure within a social context)

How are volunteer organizations primarily funded?
Q. I am thinking mainly of ESL literacy organizations. I realize they have the volunteers for the work, but they also ussually have full time staff, facilities and revenue. Do donations keep these organizations afloat, or do they tap into some sort of government grant handout that supports them because they are serving the community (whatever that means) I would like to know how these organizations work? I'm believer in the follow the money principle but where is the money come from?

Do you know of any charitable organizations I could donate books to?
Q. Does anybody know of any charitable organizations in the San Fernando Valley (CA) that would accept/need a donation of books? It has to be a group/organization that would not resell them. We have boxes of leftover holiday clearance books that need a home. Most of them are children's books, but some are for adults. I would be grateful for any information you could give me! The only reason I say it cannot be an organization that will resell them is because those are our company rules, or else we cannot donate the books.

A. The local United Way can direct you to homeless shelters that house moms and kids and to domestic violence shelters. Kids and moms in shelters have had to leave behind a lot of things including books and books will encourage reading. Another possibility is to call your local schools and ask to speak to the hiomeless students coordinator. Your books can help make difference by opening the doors to reading for pleasure to kids who may never have owned a book of their own before.

What are some good charities or organizations to donate to?
Q. My fiends and I want to do somewhat of a Secret Santa and buy something and donate to some charities or organizations that help the less fortunate. The only thing is, some of my friends are not in my state. So, what are some good charities or organizations that are located in just about every state?

A. How about you help someone on kiva.org? These people are trying to improve their situation for themselves and their families in the 3rd World by starting small local projects and businesses. You can help them directly by lending them money, interest free. The risk is actually very low as about 95% of the money is paid back. When you get it back, you help someone else! EDIT: Thanks for clearing that up, RoofingPrincess! Turns out Kiva doesn't charge interest, but Kiva actually deals with microfinance partners on the field and these partners do charge various rates.
