A seed ( /ˈsiːd/ (help·info)) is a small embryonic plant enclosed in a covering called the seed coat, usually with some stored food. It is the product of the ripened ovule of gymnosperm and angiosperm plants which occurs after fertilization and some growth within the mother plant. The formation of the seed completes the process of reproduction in seed plants (started with the development of flowers and pollination), with the embryo developed from the zygote and the seed coat from the integuments of the ovule.

Seeds have been an important development in the reproduction and spread of flowering plants, relative to more primitive plants like mosses, ferns and liverworts, which do not have seeds and use other means to propagate themselves. This can be seen by the success of seed plants (both gymnosperms and angiosperms) in dominating biological niches on land, from forests to grasslands both in hot and cold climates.

The term seed also has a general meaning that predates the above — anything that can be sown i.e. "seed" potatoes, "seeds" of corn or sunflower "seeds". In the case of sunflower and corn "seeds", what is sown is the seed enclosed in a shell or hull, and the potato is a tuber.

seeds?????
Q. what will happen when seeds grow in: a fridge Darkness without oxygen Without water will they grow or wont they grow?? Thanks =D

A. Seeds require water and oxygen. Without those, no growth. Many seeds can start in darkness, but will not produce much chlorophyll, and so be pale or white. Since your fridge is set below 40 degress F, most seeds will sit dormant until they warm up. There might be a few tundra species that think of your fridge as a nice, warm place, though.

How do I care for Mimosa Tree Seeds till spring?
Q. I collected several seeds from my Mimosa Tree this fall when the pods where brown and dry. A friend said some seeds must go through a freeze to germinate. Is this true - I've had these seeds in the house since collecting them. Any tips?

A. as long as they were matured and dried when you collected them then they should be fully viable. no they don't have to freeze to germinate. they actually like warmer weather and don't really flourish as well in area with longer winters. The best thing to do would be to get seedlings going pretty soon and then pamper the seedlings indoors in a window sill until spring. that way they have a head-start on surviving in the spring. Seeds don't have a high germination rate outside in the spring because all animals, birds and insects are voraciously foraging for food (seeds) and yes even seeds underground are vulnerable to termites, squirrels ants and birds. Also tender saplings are easy targets for many creatures such as rabbits and deer. So… [cont.]

How do you extract seeds from plants that you have grown last season?
Q. With the economy spiraling and our future in doubt I would like to know how to extract seeds from plants that I have already grown. How do I do it. Plus would these seeds germinate?

A. OK, you have a great idea here, but forget about trying to save seed now. But start planning for saving from next season now. Buy seeds of heritage varieties of things like tomatoes, corn, etc, instead of hybrids. Let plants that you want to save for seed mature in your garden instead of harvesting at the stage you would for food. You will have the whole growing season to study on how to save and store your seeds for the following year. You may be able to salvage seed from a few things from your garden now, but I doubt if there are many and they may not be the genotypes that you will want to save. Plan ahead.
